Originating from Australia, this handsome fern will slowly start to produce cord-like rhizomes that are studded with a mixture of lustrous green fronds. These new fronds will vary in shape and size (from quite small and simple, to more intricate and deeply lobed), but they all share a softly ruffled appearance and rich green colouring. As they grow, the creeping stems will start spilling over the edges of the pot, so they can either be left to trail, or tucked into fresh compost when the time comes for the plant to be potted on.

Position: bright, indirect light

Soil: good potting compost

Rate of growth: average

Hardiness: tender (indoors only)

Home care: Keep the compost moist (but not waterlogged) at all times, but this can be cut back a little in winter, and place in a bright spot away from direct sunlight. These ferns love a humid atmosphere, so mist the leaves regularly with water and/or place the pot on pebbles in a tray filled with water. Maintain temperatures above 10°C in winter and avoid summer temperatures above 25°C. Repot in spring when the plant becomes root-
